KEY FIDIC CONTRACTS AND THEIR PURPOSES:
FIDIC Conditions are published in a series of colour-coded books, each tailored to specific
types of projects and procurement arrangements:
THE RED BOOK - TRADITIONAL BUILD PROJECTS:
Responsibilities:
The employer is responsible for the design of the project.
The contractor is responsible for executing the works based on the
employer’s design.
Key Features:
Detailed provisions for variations and extensions of time.
The engineer acts as the employer’s representative, administering the
contract and certifying payments.
THE YELLOW BOOK - DESIGN-BUILD CONTRACTS:
Responsibilities:
The contractor takes on the responsibility for both design and construction.
Key Features:
The employer provides the project’s performance specifications.
Suitable for projects requiring a single point of responsibility.
THE SILVER BOOK - EPC (ENGINEERING, PROCUREMENT, CONSTRUCTION) or TURNKEY PROJECTS:
Responsibilities:
The contractor assumes full responsibility for delivering a completed facility.
Key Features:
The contractor bears most of the project risks, including design, construction, and
performance.
Best suited for projects with a fixed-price, fixed-time approach.
THE GREEN BOOK - SIMPLIFIED CONTRACTS FOR SMALLER OR LESS COMPLEX PROJECTS:
Key Features:
Suitable for projects with straightforward scopes and minimal risk.
Concise provisions, easy to administer.
THE WHITE BOOK - PROFESSIONAL SERVICES CONTRACTS FOR CONSULTANTS:
Responsibilities:
Defines the scope of consultancy services, such as design, supervision, or
advisory roles.
Key Features:
Focuses on intellectual services rather than physical construction works.
